Have you ever smelt a Sunrise?

I had gone running this morning. The usual discipline of pursuing my health goals and sparking my creativity with a long (ish) run. No, it’s not exhausting. Occasionally I would stop and take a picture, something to help trigger an idea I may have had while running at a more convenient moment.

When I returned home, the regular Sunday  conversation with the old lady beckoned. She was hyped up at 6am, fresh as a daisy, already into her daily routine. I was still gathering my thoughts for an article that was overdue, struggling to get the words to flow.

“What gets you so hyped up on a morning at 88 years of age?” I was chiding her more than asking. Perhaps it was my frustrations with the piece.

“Haven’t you ever smelt a sunrise?”  her quick response threw me.

“Erm… NO?”

She laughed.  “You will one day. Nature is at its most glorious, freshest, most exciting at the break of dawn. All of nature is excited to face the day. To be and to do what they were meant to do.”

“And it has a specific scent?”

“Yes… Learn to feel, taste, and smell nature coming alive. It would spark your creativity.”

I have been thinking about it on my drive to work. Now here in the parking lot writing this blog post, I’m sniffing the air like a bloodhound. Old people speak in parables man…

But I will try to enjoy these moments when nature sparkles, giving the air the air a hint of anticipation and promise.
